This was, if not our best, then one of our top two trips we have taken. I cannot say enough good things about Egypt and about our tour company, Flo Tours. Continue reading “AN INTRODUCTION TO OUR EGYPT ADVENTURE”
OCTOBER 11-12 TRAVEL DAY AND ARRIVE CAIRO
October 11-12 2018
A very long day! We left Winnipeg at 7am, a stopover in Toronto, then boarded Egypt Air for our 10 hour flight. No alcohol served on Egypt Air….but I survived. Our flight arrived in Cairo at 5:00am. We were met by Yasser, the tour manager and his wonderful driver whose name I never got. He took us to our hotel in record time, apparently (today is Friday, a religious day here so everyone is at home and it is 6am). Continue reading “OCTOBER 11-12 TRAVEL DAY AND ARRIVE CAIRO”
HISTORY OF THE PHARAOHS
I have included this history because it is something I find fascinating. However, things don’t really start heating up until the start of the New Kingdom. Then again, when it gets to the Hellenistic Period. Continue reading “HISTORY OF THE PHARAOHS”
OCTOBER 13 SAQQARA, THE GIZA PYRAMIDS AND MORE
October 13 2018
We started our day with Susie, our guide and Sharif our diver. Our first stop was for a traditional Egyptian breakfast – Felafel….but not just felafel. We had a regular and another bun with feta and olives. Both delicious. Continue reading “OCTOBER 13 SAQQARA, THE GIZA PYRAMIDS AND MORE”
OCTOBER 14 THE EGYPTIAN MUSEUM, COPTIC CHURCHES AND SO MUCH MORE
OCTOBER 14 2018
Breakfast in the hotel dining room. There were a lot of very different things that didnât seem like breakfast food to me. So I had fruit, fresh dates, chutneys on a very dry piece of something and a tasty muffin. Brian had eggs and toast and discovered that there was no bacon, which makes sense, of course.
Susie and Sharif picked us up and we went to the Egyptian museum. There are about 160000 pieces on display. A new museum is opening in 2020 because there are 120000 pieces in storage. So much history! Of course the highlight of the museum is the Tutankhamen exhibit. No photos here allowed. Sadly, we did as we were told but many others were taking pictures with their cell phones, of courseđĄ. We are too law abiding I guess! Photos were allowed everywhere else (paid for the privilege) except for the mummy exhibition. Continue reading “OCTOBER 14 THE EGYPTIAN MUSEUM, COPTIC CHURCHES AND SO MUCH MORE”
The Mystical Magical Mythology of Egypt
The Egyptian mythology is an incredibly important part of their history. The individual stories are fun and fascinating and played a huge part in how their society functioned.
I discovered a perfect website that contains everything I could ever want to know about Egyptian mythology. I won’t “burden” you with all of the history in long form because I can simply list the links to be accessed at your leisure if you are so inclined! OCTOBER 15 2018 A FLIGHT TO LUXOR, BOARDING OUR BOAT AND OUR FIRST TOUR
October 15 2018
A long day ahead of us! Our driver picked us up at 4:30 for our 7:35 flight. We were given a breakfast box by the hotel – lots of bread and very little else except for 1 sandwich filled with lots of very delicious meat. On the way to the airport we picked up Yasser and he accompanied us to give us important information about the next few days while on our cruise. The boarding and flight were uneventful, thank goodness. On schedule, we were picked up by a driver and were taken to our cruise ship (The Nile Dolphin) where we met our guide for our next few days Mohamed. Another very nice person and I trust he will be very knowledgeable since he works for Yasser. With Yasser everything has to be the best! OCTOBER 16 SECOND DAY IN LUXOR BALLOON RIDE!
October 16 2018
Pick up at 4:30am again for our hot air ballon ride! We were transferred by car to a boat where we had tea and coffee and a snack, and then a van transferred us to our âballoonportâ on the West Bank. Probably a dozen or more balloons were launched. Such a sight! I know that hot air balloons are considered a bit risky but who cares! This was an experience of a lifetime….and we survived! We saw the sun rise, we saw the historical sites that we would be touring later, the crops that were being grown in this region -sugar cane, mostly but other crops as well. Continue reading “OCTOBER 16 SECOND DAY IN LUXOR BALLOON RIDE!”
OCTOBER 17 ANOTHER BIG DAY – EDFU AND KOM OMBO
October 17 2018
We got to sleep in today – 6:45am wakeup. Our first breakfast buffet on the ship. Definitely an experience. Everyone lines up at the door to get an omelet….so that takes a good 10 minutes. There are other hot items, then a salad bar, then the toaster. It is a 2 slice toaster that is as slow as molasses! So there is a big lineup here and by the time you get your toast, the eggs are cold!
We woke up in Edfu which is a village of 600-800. We met Mohamed at 8 to visit Edfu or Horus Temple. We took a horse drawn buggy to the temple. These are the taxis of Edfu, or tuk tuks. Continue reading “OCTOBER 17 ANOTHER BIG DAY – EDFU AND KOM OMBO”
